Washing Machine Smells Bad — Mould, Bacteria, Blockage
Your fresh laundry smells worse than before washing? Or opening the door hits you with a musty smell? This isn't just unpleasant — mould and bacteria can cause allergies and skin problems. The good news: most cases are fixable at home.
1. Mould on the door seal
The main culprit. Moisture, detergent residue and lint collect under the rubber gasket — perfect conditions for mould. Peel back the seal — black spots mean mould.
Fix: Scrub with baking soda + vinegar (1:1). Wipe dry after every wash.
2. Detergent drawer
Remove and wash with hot water and baking soda monthly.
3. Drain filter
Clean monthly — it collects everything that doesn't drain with the water.
4. Sewer smell coming back
If the smell comes from the hose, not the drum — improper drainage connection. The hose needs a siphon or U-bend.
5. Always washing at low temperatures
At 30-40°C bacteria survive. Run an empty 90°C cycle with vinegar monthly.
Prevention
- Leave the door open 2-3 hours after each wash
- Wipe the seal dry
- Clean drawer and filter monthly
