Washing Machine Not Draining — Causes and Fixes

The wash program finished ages ago, but there's still water inside. The door won't open and your clothes are submerged. Don't panic — this is usually not a serious breakdown. We handle at least 10-15 of these calls per week and fix most of them in 30 minutes.

Clean the drain filter

Every washing machine has a small access panel at the bottom front. Behind it sits the drain filter where coins, hairpins and small objects collect. Clean it monthly and you'll never face this issue.

Blocked or kinked drain hose

Check where the hose connects to the drain. The hose must be at least 60 cm above the floor to prevent siphon effect.

Faulty drain pump

If the filter is clean and hose is fine, the pump is likely the problem. Listen during drain: silence means the pump is burned out, buzzing without drainage means the impeller is blocked.

Emergency drain procedure

• Unplug the machine
• Open the bottom panel, direct the emergency hose into a container
• Drain manually, then open the door
